Firefox 3: One Browser to Rule Them All

I've been using Firefox since it was known as Phoenix back in the 0.1 days and have always been really pleased with the project overall. Using Firefox has always been a pleasure with good performance, stability and extensibility. It had gotten so good that I didn't think Firefox 3 could really be that much more awesome. After using it for several weeks, I can tell you that it far exceeded my high expectations and sets a new bar for what we should expect out of a browser.

When I left Las Vegas for a new life in Utah, I also left behind several friends. Just prior to moving, I'd had a falling out with one of them that bordered on epic. Since we both had mutual friends and I was the one leaving town, it pretty much cut me off from all of them. After arriving in Salt Lake, I had contact with him a few more times, mostly to close up some loose ends like domain registrations and the like. (When you're friends with someone for nearly a decade, you tend to get some things mixed up.) It had been left at that for almost three years.

He’s Dead, Jim

I can count only a handful of times that I've experienced some kind of computer hardware failure. The most recent was a little over a year ago when the power supply in the desktop blew out unexpectedly. This morning, I got the rare "pleasure" of experiencing it again when I found that the desktop refused to power on. It was obviously still getting power because some of the lights in the back were still on. I tried everything I could think of, even swapping the power supply with a spare that was sitting around. No dice. My best guess is that the motherboard, after 5 long years of heavy usage, finally decided to give up.

No, this isn't a parody. This is a real product. I think that Gabe at Penny Arcade put it best:

That's about the smartest thing anyone could say on the matter.

The Diminishing Value of a College Education

For decades, it's been considered common knowledge that a college degree was your ticket to a well-paying job. Salary surveys back it up, usually showing substantial wage differences between those with a high school diploma and those holding a bachelor's degree. Despite this, the value of a college degree has been rapidly diminishing and could be of little value by the time my own children are young adults.

Doing Something About High Energy Prices

If you want to see Americans get angry, just start talking about the price of gas. Or maybe ask a Californian about electricity prices during the blackouts. It seems that we're enormously sensitive to the cost of energy. I myself can remember paying just over a dollar per gallon for gas just over a decade ago and the thought that the price is currently about quadruple that is absurd. Despite all of the rage and indignation, it seems we don't have much direct control over the market forces. Or do we?
