The Best Entertainment on TV

Where does it come from? Probably this guy:

Alton Brown

(source)

Yes, a certain Mr. Alton Brown. Anyone who's caught more than a few episodes of his landmark TV show, Good Eats, knows what I'm talking about. It's part sketch comedy, part Mr. Wizard-style food science, part cooking show and a blast to watch. Shauna and I have been watching it quite a bit lately (at my insistence more than hers) and we're getting inspiration. You know, to make crepes. Or carve up our own tenderloin. Perhaps try out some exotic kinds of oats. You know, stuff we probably wouldn't have even thought to do beforehand.

If you don't have cable to see it on Food Network, don't fret: you can grab whole seasons of it on DVD from your favorite retailer or rental place. Or borrow some from a foodie friend. Whatever you do, watch at least a few episodes and experience what could arguably be the perfect meeting of entertainment and food preparation. I get hungry just thinking about it.

I couldn’t agree more. I’ve been a fan of Good Eats and Alton Brown for a few years now and have made it a habit to archive my favorite episodes off of the DVR and onto DVD. I’ve found that I use them often!

Have you checked out his cook books? They are definitely worth looking at.

I haven’t gotten into his books yet. We’re trying to branch out into Indian food at the moment (since eating out at Royal India on a bi-weekly basis hurts the pocketbook so much) which has, naturally, delayed getting back into American-style cuisine. Who knows where we’ll go once I can perfect saag gosht or chicken tikka masala. Mmmm.

Alton rocks! I love that he explains the science behind food. And thanks to him, I can finally make perfect scrambled eggs!

Thats one of those shows that I’ve never sat down to intentionally watch, but am always fascinated whenever I happen to catch an episode.
I LOVED his episode on chocolate chip cookies.
