Did you know that we're gardeners now? We garden?

Outside in the dirt in the ground? With the wind and the sky and everything? We garden!

Strawberry Garden

Isn't it beautiful? That's what 50 newly planted strawberry plants look like. You're all invited for strawberry shortcake this summer.

Strawberry garden 2

The kit included this little netting thingie that's supposed to be for keeping the birds away from our strawberries. But I think the garden people knew we had beagles. Annabelle was very interested in the plants, the planter, the gardening tools, the loose dirt… pretty much everything and every part of the process. Considering what she's done to our one and only houseplant, I'm glad someone had the foresight to send us the netting.

    That is gorgeous! I’m impressed.

Word of advice? Watch the ants also. We had plenty of strawberries ripped from us due to those pesky creatures.

How in the world would you keep ants out of there?

I just did a bit of looking around and there’s a surprising number of organic ant repellents on the market. For instance: diatomaceous earth. It’s abrasive and ends up cutting the ants open as the walk across it so that they get dehydrated and die off.

Looks like you are all over it. Smart research.

  6. I like the word “diatomaceous”. I also like “symbiotic” and “immunosuppression”. I wonder if I could use them all in a sentence.

Probably. But it would have nothing to do with strawberries. Unless they were, like, alien strawberries with AIDS.

Some say spices are good for repelling ants, but don’t use cinnamon! It caused a massive invasion in my apartment a few years back.
I know Cayenne pepper keeps the deer off my tulips, I’m going to try it for bugs this year. Last year I used nontoxic insecticidal soap to kill them.

What is the name of that cool strawberry growing kit? And where can I get one?

    Thanks!

We found it in a Gurney’s Seed catalog. You can buy one for yourself here: http://gurneys.com/product.asp_Q_pn_E_12696

[…] last year's foray into growing strawberries? Remember the pathetic harvest that was barely even a pint? I think we're going to do better […]
